Guests are also invited to use the traditional dining room, complete with candelabra and another cosy fire. Here you can gaze at garden views whilst tucking into bacon and eggs or smoked salmon, and spread the Sunday papers over the oak refectory table.

Just sit and relax

DRAWING ROOM

Mullion windows around a window seat, a huge brick fireplace, and comfy sofas and chairs around. Hardly a “Homes & Gardens” photo opportunity (yet!), but a room that’s comfortable with itself, and for you.

Traditional Ambience

This room overlooks the west lawn and herbaceous border with pond and fountain to the west of the house. The view continues to the wooded hills beyond, leading to the Dorset Gap.

The acer’s foliage in the far bed gives a shot of colour, even before the clematis climbing the walls begins to bloom.

Garden Room en-suite

Here you have a traditional feel: brass and black bedstead, antique furniture. Plenty of storage space; both hanging and drawers, and a corner chair to relax in.

The ensuite bathroom though, is modern and fully tiled (though with one beam still exposed), with a large bath and fixed shower and heated towel rail. And of course – with all the usual plush towels and waffle dressing gowns. Just the thing after a long walk through the woods!

Shades of Provence

Named after the field which it overlooks (all the fields at Melcombe have names), the Chapel Close Room colours are muted blues and beiges and off-whites and stripes – some say with shades of Provence.

Distressed white wooden furniture, and wrought iron bedstead reinforce this thought, but in fact it is mostly a reinvention of Lorel’s bedroom in Chelsea before Michael lured her to deepest Dorset!

Chapel Close Room

The top floor was completely refurbished in 2008, and gives a complete contrast to the oak panelled bedrooms elsewhere.

The ensuite bathroom is surprisingly spacious, with a decent fixed-head power shower over the bath, heated towel rail, and plenty of surface space to put your own bits and bobs.

Even a heated cupboard with lots of spare fluffy towels and a cabinet full of scented goodies. You can arrive and be comfy with just your toothbrush – though even those are supplied.

It’s a firm favourite with our single male guests who enjoy the ambiance and the views over the front lawn and Chapel Close through the mullion windows.

There is a large wardrobe and chest of drawers, so plenty of decent storage for heavy walking or stalking gear.
